Presenting: Legends of Action Figure History
An action figure trilogy of podcasts aka "The Toys that Defined Us!"
I loved these interviews with the founders of Palisades Toys, SOTA Toys and Art Asylum and that they made up a trilogy time-capsule of the time, that I am re-presenting them together here with some extra context - if you haven’t heard them before I think they paint a deeper picture than any toy documentary can.
The Legends of Action Figure History includes Mike Horn of Palisades Toys, Jerry Macaluso of SOTA Toys and Digger Mesch and Donna Costa of Art Asylum is here.
5. Snake-Eyes in Fortnite
This was probably set up ages ago to coincide with the Snake-Eyes movie but since we are not going to see that till October, Fortnite and Hasbro released not only a Fortnite skin for the GI Joe ninja but also a Hasbro Pulse exclusive action figure drop. I didn’t hear much about this before logging into Fortnite this week and what a great surprise. Exciting to see Hasbro use Fortnite to promote their incredible GI Joe Classified line and the Snake-Eyes movie.
4. Ultraman
Godzilla vs Kong is exciting but even more exciting is brand new 2021 Shin Ultraman movie coming from Japan. The trailer dropped this week and it looks great. The notable creative includes Hideaki Anno - the creator of the most epic anime of all time Neon Genesis Evangelion - and co-director of Shin Godzilla Shinji Higuchi, have teamed up for another kaiju-battlin’ movie this Summer. Check out the trailer here.
3. The Sandman
We have been waiting for this for a while, but Netflix finally announced the cast for the live-action The Sandman show! It looks like a great cast to one of the most iconic comic books of all time from DC/Vertigo. A Neil Gaiman property with amazing collectible designs, something Good Omens and American Gods lacked.
This is all great, but true fans are eagerly awaiting the casting of Death which will be a dealbreaker for many.
2. Harry Potter Universe
Every single Star Wars, Marvel and DC character has their own TV series so now HBO Max is diving into the world of Harry Potter to bring out shows based in the universe. There are tons of great fan films on YouTube set in the HPU (Harry Potter Universe) that give you an idea of what they can do outside of the core characters. But they still want Daniel Radcliffe back to kick things off.
After this, the last big IP to be mined for streaming shows is the world of 007 and I expect to see that announcement before the end of 2021.
1. SilverHawks
The SilverHawks are coming back to toy shelves thanks to Super 7 - the toy brand just announced the reveal that a line of new action figures coming soon with this tweet. Hopefully the last of the animated animal-related super-team of the 80s will meet with collector enthusiasm as much as Thundercats and Masters of the Universe have.
